{"id":1016,"date":"2023-02-21T18:54:26","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T18:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lesswing.com\/?p=1016"},"modified":"2023-02-21T18:54:26","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T18:54:26","slug":"using-a-wallet-for-identity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lesswing.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/21\/using-a-wallet-for-identity\/","title":{"rendered":"Using a Wallet for Identity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I have been working on making blockchain more approachable to consumers and have developed a model using common shopping practices found in bricks-and-mortar stores:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Walk into the door with my wallet in my pocket.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look at the items on the shelves and make a selection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open my wallet to use a card or (believe it or not) pay with cash.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I can repeat the process down an entire block of shops.  When online, I can use a payment service (or credit card, yikes!) and only have to supply an address for delivery purposes.  The address does not have to be mine, and (many times) I don&#8217;t need to create an account with the store first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I would model the same transaction using the name\/password system we use today, it might look like the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Walk into the door.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look at the items on the shelves and make a selection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell the clerk my name to retrieve my wallet from the back because they store wallets for their customers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The clerk verifies that I know the password before giving me the wallet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open my wallet to use a card or pay with cash.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Return the wallet to the clerk to be returned to the storeroom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I would probably have dozens of wallets being managed this way. As I get older, I need to remember where I have wallets and their passwords   Luckily, each of the branded hardware store locations use the same wallet for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, this is a strawman example.  In my blockchain research, I started using wallets as a way to identify users because it simplifies commerce and allows me to focus on functionality.  I do not really care about who <strong>the person behind the mask<\/strong> is, as long as they have the means to execute a transaction.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"837\" src=\"https:\/\/lesswing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2023-Net-Zero-wallet-choice.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1032\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lesswing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2023-Net-Zero-wallet-choice.png 950w, https:\/\/lesswing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2023-Net-Zero-wallet-choice-300x264.png 300w, https:\/\/lesswing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2023-Net-Zero-wallet-choice-768x677.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Presenting a list of wallet suppliers <strong>makes the identity process easy for consumers<\/strong>.  This approach could be used in a non-blockchain operation as well.  That being said, it can also be used for investing.  My interest in wallets is for <a href=\"https:\/\/lesswing.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/07\/blockchain-and-sanity\/\">identification purposes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chain-provider.com\/blog\/username-and-passwords-forget-them-they-are-finally-something-of-the-past\/\">business case for the approach<\/a>, it is important to rely on multiple sources of information.  There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1574013718301217\">more complete identity approaches<\/a> that include <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Self-sovereign_identity\">Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI)<\/a>, but I wanted to work with an approach that was less involved so that consumers could get started quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been working on making blockchain more approachable to consumers and have developed a model using common shopping practices found in bricks-and-mortar stores: I can repeat the process down an entire block of shops.
